What is Counselling?

When might Counselling be needed?
  • Keeping feelings bottled up inside;
  • feeling sad and low all the time and not understanding why;
  • grieving for a loved one who has left or died;
  • hurt by other people’s treatment of you;
  • confused about your sexuality;
  • feeling like you can’t cope;
  • feeling scared and/or anxious much of the time
  • feeling angry a lot and worried where it might lead;
  • feeling unheard;
These are all signs things need to change and that you could benefit from outside support.
Counselling can help – providing a safe space, it offers the chance to talk about everything that is important and matters to you, whatever that is. You may have a specific problem or a crisis you would like to address, or you may want the opportunity to reflect and wonder about where you have found yourself in life. Either way, counselling can provide a supportive, non-judgemental and creative space in which to explore and challenge choices and beliefs that you may have never questioned before.
What is Counselling?
A counsellor understands that the idea of talking to a stranger about your personal life can seem really daunting, but once you have taken that first, brave, single step it is highly likely you will find the experience of discussing and exploring your feelings, difficulties and worries to someone who is not directly involved in your life, to be extremely helpful.
A counsellor won’t advise you what to do, nor make judgements about you or what you say. They will listen to you and try to understand your thoughts, feelings and situations. This can help you to gain clarity and get in touch with your own resilience, wisdom and common sense to work through whatever is causing you difficulty.
You cannot control the wind
But you can learn to alter the sails.

Confidentiality
A counsellor offers complete confidentiality. Except under exceptional circumstances, any information discussed in sessions will not be disclosed to anyone without your informed consent.
